Description
A private Northern Lights tour is ideal for families or groups of friends who want to enjoy the aurora on their own schedule while still having a professional driver-guide along.
The tour starts with your driver-guide picking you up and heading out of the city, leaving the bright lights behind. The viewing destination stays a mystery until that evening, since your driver picks the best possible spot depending on weather and light forecast. The most frequently visited locations are Þingvellir National Park and the Reykjanes Peninsula, but as this is a natural phenomenon nothing is fixed in advance.
After a night spent gazing at the stars and aurora in the clear winter sky, your driver heads back to the city and drops you at your chosen location.
The Northern Lights - Aurora Borealis
The Northern Lights occur during Iceland's winter months, caused by particles from the sun interacting with the upper atmosphere near the North Pole. Green is the most common color, though on good nights the sky can show purple, red, blue, and yellow. The color depends on altitude, gas type, and solar activity: oxygen produces green and red, nitrogen produces blue and purple. Green auroras typically occur 100-240 km above the Earth's surface, red between 240-320 km, and the rarer blue auroras around 100 km.
