The Northern Lights occur during Iceland's winter months, caused by particles from the sun interacting with the upper atmosphere near the North Pole. The color depends on altitude, gas type, and solar activity: oxygen produces green and red, nitrogen produces blue and purple. Green auroras typically occur 100-240 km above the Earth's surface, red between 240-320 km, and the rarer blue auroras around 100 km.
